New gTLDs

New Top Level Domains

The new TLDs or Top Level Domains mark a massive expansion in the Domain Name System. With traditional domain extensions like .com and .co.uk reaching near saturation, brands have had to opt for longer and more complicated domain names. The release of new TLDs enables businesses to secure shorter, more relevant and more memorable domain names.

About Top Level Domains

Over the last few years, the number of Top Level Domains, or TLDs has exploded. Alongside traditional gTLDs like .com, .net and .info, there have been releases of hundreds of new TLDs.

Generic TLDs or gTLDs were named to differentiate them from Country Code TLDs or ccTLDs and other categories by IANA, the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority. IANA is responsible as a department of ICANN, for the assigment of globally unique identifiers such as domain names and IP (internet protocol) addresses.

ICANN is the body that essentially governs and coordinates unique identifiers across the world, delivering one global internet. They are responsible for the huge reductions in domain registration fees, establishing competition in the gTLD registration market and saving businesses and consumers millions of pounds per year.
